Kiepersol Colliery is a key operational activity in the Gert Sibande region, Mpumalanga, South Africa. It's known for producing high-quality anthracite and lean bituminous coal, which is sold in both domestic and international metallurgical coal markets. The colliery has a maximum capacity of 1.2 MTPA. In the 2022-23 financial year, its EBITDA was $31 million, a significant increase from $10.4 million in 2021-22.
The 10 MTPA open-cast Chirodzi coal mine began operations in 2013, producing 3 MT in the first phase. It has 1.35 billion tons of reserves and a 25-year projected mine life. The company has been exporting coal from the port of Beira since 2013. It plans to construct a coal-based independent power plant in association with the government.
JSP is committed to partnering with Botswana's development journey outlined in Vision 2030 and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). They have secured 313 square kilometres of land with 2.7 billion tons of coal reserves. Environmental approval is in place, and rehabilitation work for 700 million tons of coal from open-cast mines has been completed. The company plans to begin mining at a rate of 4.5 MTPA, with potential expansion to 14.5 MTPA, based on the current mining plan.
